Joakim is a designer of many talents, creating everything from furniture to set design to homeware in different types of materials. Usually wood. Joakims practice always starts from tactile experiments with materials and form. We met Joakim when he was the set designer for shoots at & Other Stories and you could tell there was something special about his designs when people tried to bring the props home after the shoots.

The works are results of a process where all possibilities of hesitation are removed. Drawing with a technique that prevents you from correcting, erasing or even stopping for a moment creates a tension and a special focus in the present moment. What is drawn can not be undone. The first draft becomes the final drawing.

The Ode To Joakim Nyström Artist PortraitEach artwork requires time and dedication. First the wood is painted/treated with wood stain in several layers for the right colour effect and then protected with enamel paint.

The Ode To Joakim Nyström Artist PortraitOrganic patterns are cut by hand with a wood router in one go directly into laminated, oiled or painted wood boards.

The Ode To Joakim Nyström Artist PortraitThe edges of the pattern is then filed by hand for a nice finish and a thin wood frame is attached. Et voilá - something unique is made.

Joakim is trained at Konstfack Collage of Arts and Crafts and The Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm and works with design in various contexts. Apart from his own practice Joakim has worked for architecture practice Raumlabor Berlin, artist Jonas Dahlberg and as a designer for retail brands & Other Stories and Arket among others.
