Beauty lies in the ordinary

At The Ode To we are always curious to learn more about creativity and artistry, so we asked artist Nina Flagstad Kvorning to tell us about her life, her art and her sources of inspiration.

How would you describe your art and aesthetics in three words?

– Vibrant, dense and warm.

How would you describe your art and aesthetics in three words?

– This series of artworks is called Everyday Moments, and I have created it using soft oil pastels on paper.

What inspired you to create the artworks you have made for The Ode To?

– My work is inspired by nature and the changing seasons in Scandinavia, as well as everyday objects, places and situations; the things that are close to us. This time I wanted to do smaller drawings, but with very bold and vibrant colors to show the warmth of the moments within those spaces. I use colour and the fullness of the oil pastel texture to enhance a feeling or sensation connected to the image.

What importance does the home have for your artistic work?

– I am especially inspired by the things that are rooted in our relations to the private world of our lives; what we love, the objects we choose to surround ourselves with and the intimate setting of our homes. It can seem simple or boring but there is a lot of information, negative or positive, hidden in the small moments of everyday life. I want to portray and create space for whatever is there.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and what’s significant for your work?

– I’ve studied at the Kolding School of Design and at the OCAD University in Toronto. It was during my time in Canada that I developed a fascination for how our inner landscapes of thoughts and emotions affect our experience in the space surrounding us. The opposite also struck me; how the elements around us affect our well-being.
